Representing Queens at the City Championships: Studio X on the Mat

There’s a moment at every tournament, right after the last match, when it all hits you — the weeks of drilling, the early mornings, the hard rounds at practice. You look around at your teammates and you realize it was worth every second.

That moment happened for us at this year’s city championships.

Our squad showed up to Springfield Gardens High School ready to compete, and they did exactly that. Athletes from across the city came out, but Studio X brought something that can’t be coached on a whiteboard: a mentality forged through consistent, hard-nosed training.

The Preparation Behind the Performance

The lead-up to any city-level tournament is a gauntlet. For several weeks before competition day, our training sessions shifted. Live drilling got sharper. Situational work replaced some of the longer technique blocks. Athletes who usually go easy on each other were pushed to replicate match intensity on every rep.

What you don’t see in the photo — but what made it possible — was the mat time put in at the Cellar beforehand. Hundreds of shots. Hundreds of reps at finishing, at riding, at breaking guys down from top position. The work was done.

Competition Day

Walking into Springfield Gardens, you feel the energy immediately. Multiple mats running simultaneously, coaches in corners, parents in the bleachers, and athletes warming up with that focused, inward look that means they’re locked in.

Our athletes competed across multiple weight classes and gave full effort in every round. Some picked up wins. Some faced tough draws against experienced opponents and came away with valuable lessons. All of them walked off the mat having left everything they had on it.

That’s all we ask.

What This Means for the Program

Getting reps in competition settings is irreplaceable. It doesn’t matter how good your training partners are — tournaments expose things that practice can’t fully simulate. The nerves, the crowd, the stranger across from you who’s been drilling just as hard all season.

Our athletes came back from this tournament with a clearer picture of where they’re strong and where they need to grow. That self-knowledge is a competitive advantage. Wrestlers who compete often and reflect honestly on their performances develop faster than those who only train.

We’re proud of everyone who stepped out there and competed. That takes real courage.

What’s Next

With this tournament in the books, we’re looking ahead. If you were one of the athletes in this photo — keep building. If you’re watching from the sideline and thinking about training, this is your sign.

Group classes are $50/month, held at the Cellar (Lower Level – Below JoJu) at 83-27 Broadway, Elmhurst, NY 11373. Cash, Venmo, or Zelle accepted. DM us on Instagram @studioxwrestling to get started.
